Synopsis
IFC has an active project with United Ashuganj Energy Limited, a subsidiary of United Enterprises & Co. Ltd. The project consists of the development, construction, operation and maintenance of a 195MW combined cycle reciprocating gas engine power plant in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, approximately 90 km to the Northeast of Dhaka (the “Project”).
CAO received a complaint filed on behalf of affected residents of the vicinity of the Project, alleging that the Project is causing air and noise pollution and subsequent health issues for residents. The complaint also raises concerns related to the management of hazardous waste.
CAO found the complaint eligible in June 2016, and conducted an assessment to discuss options for addressing the complaint with the relevant parties. During the assessment process, the complainants and the IFC client expressed their willingness to engage in a voluntary dispute resolution process facilitated by CAO.
As a result of CAO’s dispute resolution process, the parties reached an agreement in December 2016 to address the complaint issues. The agreement has been kept confidential at the parties’ request. CAO monitored the implementation of the agreement, as agreed by the parties, and upon completion of the monitoring phase, CAO issued a conclusion report in September 2017. The report summarizes the dispute resolution process, and marks the closure of the case. See “view documents” for documents related to this case.
This case is now closed following monitoring of the agreement reached by the parties.
